Holocaust Education Development Programme

In 2006 the Foundation conducted research into the Holocaust Education field in the UK, culminating in a symposium attended by educators, academics and survivors of the Holocaust. The need for effective teacher training programmes and resources emerged as a priority as did more evaluation of the work of Holocaust education organisations.

In 2007 we agreed a £1.5 million, 3 year partnership with the British Government's Department for Children Schools and Families to advance Holocaust Education in the UK with a focus on teacher training. The Institute of Education was selected as the delivery partner and the Holocaust Education Development Programme was established in September 2008.

The objective of the programme is to improve the quality and reach of teacher training and equip teachers with the knowledge and resources they need to educate young people. Working in partnership with Holocaust education organisations, the HEDP will deliver an ambitious nationwide teacher training programme for teachers of History, Citizenship and Religious Studies.

The programme began with a national research project to examine teacher attitudes and how the Holocaust is currently taught in schools. Over 2000 teachers were surveyed and follow-up interviews were conducted across the country. The resulting report, published in September 2009, is the largest endeavour of its kind in the UK in both scope and scale, and will inform the development of the teacher training programme.
