Mentoring
We believe that many young people could benefit
from spending time with a mentor, and that being a mentor offers
an opportunity to develop a constructive relationship and make
a tangible impact on a young person’s life.
The Pears Foundation commissioned research by New Philanthropy
Capital into mentoring schemes for young people at risk. Their
report, Lean on Me, provides an overview of existing provision
and recommendations for donors who are seeking to provide funding
in this area. The report was used to inform the Foundation’s
strategy for working in this area.

The Children’s Society National Mentoring
Initiative
Following this research The Foundation has become
a founding partner of a new mentoring initiative launched by The
Children’s Society in 2008 to provide
mentoring for children and young people across the UK.
This is the first national mentoring initiative in the UK.
The aim is to improve young people's confidence, self esteem and motivation at
school, to raise their hopes and aspirations and give them the ability to build
positive relationships with peers, teachers and parents.
The initiative is based on a similar programme in America, which found that young
people who were mentored were significantly less likely to miss school, start
using drugs and alcohol, physically hurt another person or lie to their parents.
The Children’s Society will provide full training, guidance and support
for the mentors.
The Children's Society is a leading national charity, driven by the belief that
every child deserves a good childhood. Their national network of projects, research
and campaigning improves the lives of thousands of children and families each
year.
