Pears Program for Global Innovation, Tel Aviv University

Throughout this whole process, the Pears Foundation has been an active and engaged partner. As our Program has progressed, redefining itself from year to year, developing new objectives and programming, the Pears Foundation has stayed with us every step of the way. Their openness to new ideas has enabled us to take risks and lead the Program in untested directions. They have given us the space (and the resources) to try, to learn from our mistakes, and to improve. One thing that I find particularly admirable about the relationship that we have with the Pears Foundation is the mutual trust that we have developed over the years. That sort of faith in us, and the trust that we have for the Foundation in return, make the relationship both a blessing and a pleasure for us.
Dr Aliza Belman Inbal, Program Director
We must leverage the incredible culture of innovation and entrepreneurship that exists in Israel to benefit the world’s poorest people. Building a community of Israeli visionaries and innovative leaders has the potential to create a lasting change in the world.
Trevor Pears CMG

The Pears Program for Global Innovation works to increase Israel’s contribution to international development through technology-based, financially sustainable solutions to problems facing people affected by poverty.

Pears Foundation has long been dedicated to harnessing the power of Israeli innovation to address the needs of the developing world. The Pears Program is enabling Israeli entrepreneurs and innovators to play a larger role in addressing the most pressing challenges of our time: ensuring water, food, clean energy, healthcare and education for all.

The Pears Program’s main areas of activity are:

  • Policy: Convening government, business and international organisations and works with a range of Israeli agencies, including government departments and the Prime Minister’s Office, to develop policies and programmes.
  • Community: Hosting the Israeldev community, a professional network dedicated to harnessing Israeli innovation to address barriers to international development.
  • Programming: Offering a full schedule of events and seminars to inform, inspire and build the capacity of the sector.

The Pears Program’s flagship initiative is the Pears Challenge. Over the course of a year, a small group of outstanding Israeli entrepreneurs and innovators are guided through the process of generating new technologies and structuring business plans relevant to developing countries.  They receive ongoing support for their innovations including help with piloting and connecting with seed financing, through to successful commercialisation and scale up.

Pears Foundation’s partnership with Tel Aviv University began in 2006 with the creation of a Pears Fellow in International Development post and a research report on Israel’s aid budget, both of which evolved over time into the Pears Program. The Foundation has provided core support for the Program since then, enabling it to grow, strengthen its networks, create new initiatives and achieve greater impact.
