The Big Green Jewish Website launches “Year of the Bagel”
A campaign to engage the Jewish community with climate change and sustainability has been launched with the backing of Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne.
The Big Green Jewish Website is the home of the climate change campaign of the UK Jewish community. Working with other faith groups and environment and sustainability NGOs, it aims to raise awareness about environmental issues through education about climate change and to empower people to make changes in their lives that will make a difference to the world.
The campaign is a four-year initiative that will generate new activity and interest across the community on green issues. Beginning with the “Year of the Bagel”, it will focus on reducing the environmental impact of the food we eat, including drives to buy local and seasonal produce and encouraging individuals and community institutions to switch to eco-friendly packaging and disposable tableware.
The next three years will, in turn, address transport, waste and recycling, and energy conservation of buildings such as synagogues.
Chris Huhne added his support to the campaign with a comment piece in the Jewish Chronicle:
“With projects such as edible gardens in schools and carbon ration activities on summer camps, the Big Green Jewish Campaign is re-engaging people with nature. This fosters true appreciation of what it is people are seeking to protect and encourages them to consider the relationship with their own environment as they take action to protect global sustainability…
Climate change is a global problem that demands a robust global response. Internationally, we are working to secure a legally binding, ambitious global deal….Faith groups too can play a major role in the fight against climate change. The ethical values, local community roots and international reach of our great faith traditions can encourage individuals to change behaviour and can influence the global debate.
The Big Green Jewish Website is an initiative of the Jewish Social Action Forum, a body of organisations supported by Pears Foundation through its operating programme JHub, the Jewish Social Action Hub.
